Transformation journey or destination?

What's on the horizon for your organization?

Whether your organization is still in the planning stages or has already traveled years into a transformation journey, chances are that your journey and the destination are looking different than what you may have initially anticipated.

As business priorities change, likely your transformation priorities will change, as well.

Depending on the magnitude and the complexity of the transformation journey, it can be difficult for an organization to adapt to these changing priorities.

In fact, several credible sources acknowledge the difficulty associated with transformation programs:

  • Clayton Christensen, who authored “The Innovator’s Dilemma” and developed the theory of “disruptive innovation”, suggested that 95% of product innovation projects fail
  • McKinsey reports that 70% of transformation projects fail
  • Gartner predicts that by 2027 more than 70% of recently implemented ERP initiatives will fail to meet their original business case goals

While such statistics may be alarming and cause concern, one might question whether an organization should undertake transformation at all if the failure rate is so high?

Clearly, though, some organizations are undertaking transformations and being successful in the marketplace.

Perhaps it is time to reflect on your transformation initiatives. Some questions to consider include:

  • How are you evaluating the success of your transformation?
  • How do you know whether your transformation is on track?
  • Do you believe your organization will reach its intended destination, or do you expect your transformation will continue indefinitely?
  • Would a “reset” of your transformation be beneficial, and what might it look like?

Structuring a successful transformation program, executing the details, adapting to changing priorities, and sustaining transformation are challenging endeavors, yet they are essential for your organization’s success.
